opinion.scot is a dedicated platform for Scotland to share opinions and ideas. We aim to provide a grounded, honest space for perspectives on Scottish life, news, and culture. Our goal is to move beyond the fast-paced news cycle and foster a fair, inclusive, and constructive dialogue that reflects the real stories of our society.

Our Perspective

We believe in independent thought that isn’t afraid to look closely at power. Our commentary is designed to be unbought and independent; we strive to avoid intrusive advertising and rely instead on community support to keep our focus where it belongs.

Our Approach

We provide a hub for general commentary on politics, arts, and news.

Our Values

We maintain a firm zero-tolerance policy toward racism, bigotry, and discrimination of any kind. We believe that meaningful discussion must be rooted in equality and respect. We do not provide a platform for rhetoric that marginalises or demeans individuals based on their identity.

Join Us

opinion.scot is built on the ideas of its contributors. We actively seek out guest contributors, including fellow researchers and journalists, who want a space for independent thought and a platform to share their insights with the rest of civic Scotland.

Our Path to a Sustainable, Independent Future

At its launch, opinion.scot operates as a lean, low-cost startup dedicated to providing a platform for independent discourse that traditional, corporate-owned media often ignores. To maintain our status as an “unbought” platform, we have made the deliberate choice to avoid intrusive advertising and the billionaire-led financial models that frequently dictate editorial tone.

The Launch Phase: Platform and Exposure

Currently, we are unable to offer financial compensation for guest contributions. Instead, we offer an environment for journalists, researchers, and academics to reach civic Scotland with deep-dive analysis that challenges the status quo. We view this initial stage as a collaborative effort among independent thinkers to build a credible alternative to the mainstream Scottish narrative.

Our Commitment to Fair Pay

We are acutely aware of the “timewarp” fees and “Dickensian” pay scales currently prevalent in the UK media industry, where some national titles pay as little as £10 for a story. We believe this systemic underpayment is a tool used by corporate interests to stifle truly independent journalism.

Our mission is to move toward a sustainability model funded by community support, such as newsletter subscriptions and direct reader contributions. Our firm intent is to begin paying our contributors as the site scales. We aim to eventually provide rates that reflect a Real Living Wage and professional standards—such as the NUJ’s recommended day rates—ensuring that those who help us critique billionaire influence are fairly compensated for their labour.

By joining us now, you are helping to build a platform that values intellectual integrity and equality over corporate profit.
